Your Fall Running Guide: The Best Routes in Boston + How to Find Your Perfect Running Partner

The best routes to run in Boston this fall, curated by Tandem Run — plus how to find your perfect running partner this season.

Fall is the best kept secret of running season in Boston. The summer heat breaks, the leaves start to turn, and suddenly every run feels a little easier, a little more scenic, and a whole lot more enjoyable.

Whether you're training for a fall race, picking up running for the first time, or just looking for a reason to get outside before the cold sets in, this is your season.

We partnered with Tandem Run, a Boston-based app that matches women with running and walking partners by pace, schedule, and neighborhood, to share some of the best routes in the city this fall. Because everything is better with a running buddy — and Tandem Run makes finding one easier than ever.

Meet Tandem Run

Tandem Run was founded by Emily and Meg, two Boston women who wanted a simpler way to find a friend to get outside with. The app matches women with running and walking partners based on pace, schedule, and neighborhood — and every match comes with a suggested route so all you have to do is show up.

Even better? You earn free stuff for getting active.

3 Fall Running Routes Worth Lacing Up For

🌊 Castle Island Loop

📍 South Boston | 2.6 miles View Route

Do you like to end your runs with ice cream, and do you like planes? Me too. Castle Island is a loop on the South Boston Harbor Walk, right under the flight path into Logan. It's great on hot summer days thanks to the ocean breeze, and the ice cream at Sullivan's is amazing. You'll see lots of cool birds (watch out for the seagulls), beautiful ocean views, and of course the impressive castle. Loop it multiple times to add distance. Don't live in the city? No problem, there's plenty of free parking.

⚓ The Harbor Walk North End Loop

📍 North End | 2.7 miles View Route

The Harbor Walk was my first run in Boston, and it's still my favorite. The seals, the sailboats, and the sunsets are incredible. You can start anywhere from Charlestown to Southie, and it's hard to get lost: just keep running next to the water. It's perfect for slower fun runs, since you're always turning corners around the piers and it can get crowded. Seeing the seals at the Aquarium is a great mid-run break. There are lots of great coffee shops along the way to stop for a post-run treat.

🦢 The Charles River Esplanade

📍 Back Bay & Beyond | 3.8 miles View Route

The Esplanade is a classic, and all of Boston agrees. From sunrise to sunset you're in good company with runners, walkers, bikers, bladers, and more. It's my go-to for speed workouts, or for a bad day when I want to see some fun wildlife (ducks, swans, bunnies). You'll never be bored with concerts at the Hatch Shell, dance lessons on the docks, sailing and crew races on the river, and stunning views of the city. For more distance, keep running west and cross back on any of the bridges farther upriver.

Find Your Running Partner This Fall

One of the best things about fall running season in Boston is the community. Run clubs are out in force, races are on the calendar, and the energy in the city is electric.

If you've been wanting to get outside more but struggle to stay consistent — or just want someone to share the miles with — Tandem Run was made for exactly that. Match by pace, neighborhood, and schedule, get a suggested route, and show up. That's it.

Download the app and find your running partner this fall. 🍂
