Meet Bron Volney: Strength Training, Entrepreneurship & Building Community at BronCore
What's it really like running your own fitness studio? Bron Volney takes us behind the scenes at BronCore Fitness, sharing the challenges and rewards of building a business, his advice for making progress in the gym, and the one guilty pleasure he just can't resist!
Meet Bron Volney, the founder of BronCore Fitness, where strength training, high-energy workouts, and a tight-knit community come together.
Known for his no-nonsense approach to fitness and big personality, Bron has built a studio that challenges people to push their limits while making genuine connections along the way.
We caught up with Bron to talk about what it takes to run his own fitness studio, why he's always believed in strength training, and what keeps him motivated both inside and outside the gym.
1. Tell us about your journey into fitness! How did you first get involved in the fitness world, and what led you to where you are today?
I first got involved in fitness in high school through competitive weightlifting, specifically barbell bench press and clean and jerk. I also competed in two bodybuilding competitions as a teenager, which really sparked my interest in sculpting my body and seeing how much I could change through my own hard work in the gym.
A lot of things led me to where I am today, but one experience really stands out. When I was 16, I trained with a trainer named Won Huh, a former Mr. Korea. He was super inspiring and worked as a full-time personal trainer.
I thought it was the coolest thing that he got to kick people's asses for a living and make a name for himself! I always looked up to him and wanted to do the same.
2. What inspired you to open BronCore Fitness?
What originally inspired me was working at a corporate gym with incredibly high turnover and aggressive, sales-hungry managers who had no compassion for the job. It motivated me to get the hell out of there and create a place where the work actually mattered.
I wanted to create classes that felt personal, like the old-school small-group training sessions and outdoor bootcamps I used to run. I ROCKED the outdoor bootcamp scene, and that's really what helped me transition into opening a brick-and-mortar studio. I built my clientele through those classes and eventually had a large enough community to get started.
My goal was to take the best parts of all the studios I'd experienced and bring them together in ONE spot!
3. Take us through a day in your life! What does a typical day look like balancing your own training, coaching clients, and running BronCore Fitness? What's your favorite part?
Haha, there's too much going on to fit into one day!
I wake up around 5 AM and get to the gym by 5:30 AM every day. I typically train 10–14 clients a day in 30-, 45-, and 60-minute sessions, and usually teach one or two classes as well.
Monday through Thursday, I normally leave the gym around 8 PM. Fridays and Saturdays are usually 5:30 AM to 1 PM, and I try to take Sundays off!
I think the HARDEST part of owning a gym is being a manager. It's having to tell people when they're doing things wrong or not to your liking while still trying to maintain a friendly relationship.
My FAVORITE part of the job is seeing HAPPY people leave the gym and watching the fun community we've created. People meet each other here and become friends for life.
4. How has your personal approach to fitness and wellness evolved over the years? What has movement taught you about yourself along the way?
My personal approach is to practice what I preach. I try to work out at least five days a week, and I work out with two of my classes each week to show I'm not all talk (LOL).
I also try to take a class at another fitness studio once a week to get myself out of my own gym and out of my comfort zone.
One thing I've learned along the way is that I NEED to warm up properly to get the most out of my workout and help prevent injuries.
5. As a fitness professional, what do you hope people take away from working out with you? Beyond the physical results, what do you want people to feel when they leave your class or session?
I might be biased here, but one of my biggest beliefs about fitness is that if you can find the time to work out and keep doing it consistently, everything else starts to fall into place.
Your health improves, life feels better, and regular exercise has so many benefits beyond the physical results.
When people leave my class or training session, I want them to feel confident, excited, and ready for what's next.
6. Fitness can sometimes feel intimidating or comparison-driven. How do you help people build confidence, embrace where they are, and feel empowered in their own fitness journey?
This can be hard for some people, especially those who are just beginning their fitness journey.
I know it's easier said than done, but you CANNOT compare yourself to anyone besides yourself from the day before, the week before, or the month before.
Small victories. Small steps. Small increments.
Pick a goal and WORK until you get there. It doesn't have to be driven by body weight or body fat. Those changes can come with time if you stay consistent and focus on other goals, like covering a certain distance on a machine within a set time or reaching a weekly step goal.
Focus on those accomplishments and keep moving forward.
7. What kind of community are you hoping to build through BronCore Fitness? What do you want people to experience when they walk through your doors?
Our community is a more intimate one. We have small classes where people remember your name and socialize a little more than they might at your average gym in Boston.
When people walk through the door, we want them to feel READY!
Music up, lights down, and your head in the game. Leave everything else outside.
8. What's something you're especially proud of in your journey so far?
Opening a studio on my own with all my hard-earned savings is something I'll always be proud of.
But I'm also proud that BronCore has been STRENGTH-based from the beginning, with cardio machines that change every week to keep things fresh.
The industry has FINALLY moved toward strength-focused workouts, and I feel like we already had that in place when we first opened in 2021.
I think we were one of the original strength-focused studios in Boston post-COVID, and I just hope more people discover us!
9. When you're not working or working out, what does life outside of fitness look like for you? What are some of your favorite ways to recharge?
I LOVE MOVIES! Scary movies, thrillers, and fiction-based movies are my favorites.
I also LOVE watching one TV show every night. After talking all day, nothing feels better than sitting on the couch, turning off my brain, and just listening!
I LOVE MY DOG, Mikelyons. I know this is corny, but dude, he's my world when I'm not thinking about the gym. I think he's a human in a dog's body (and I'm sure every other dog owner thinks the same thing about their dog, haha).
And I LOVE BAD-FOR-YOU FOOD! I'm ashamed to say that Domino's is my kryptonite. 'Nuff said.
10. What's next for you and BronCore Fitness? Anything you're excited about, working toward, or looking forward to?
I just want to keep building the brand, the team, and the community, and continue to be one of the best in the business in Boston.
